PHILLIPS, Wis. — MarquipWardUnited, a leading provider of equipment and services for the sheeting, corrugating and finishing industries, has announced a revolutionary new addition to its range of precision sheeters. The new product, named the "TSKM" (left), represents a major development that offers advanced features and innovative design in a more compact and affordable size — perfect for mid-size converting operations, folding carton plants and commercial printers.

The sheeter product line of MarquipWardUnited has grown significantly over the past eight years through a strong focus on global market coverage, new product development and the adoption of Lean manufacturing techniques. The combination of these significant technological and organizational investments; a worldwide field service and spare parts network; along with the acquisition of Apollo Sheeters Ltd. in July 2008, has provided a clear path to leadership in the global sheeter market.

For many years, the Apollo unwinding system has been praised for its cost effectiveness, ease of operation and performance. This section of the machine has been further developed in the TSKM to add innovative new features and, just as importantly, to reduce costs.

The TSKM utilizes MarquipWardUnited’s industry-leading knife design as well as state-of-the-art controls technology to give the TSKM the best speed curve on the market. This proved to be a key factor in securing the company’s first order from 3C Packaging, Inc., which selected the TSKM from MarquipWardUnited to enhance its production speed and efficiency, said Joe Elphick, CEO and president of 3C Packaging (formerly Colonial Carton Co.). This innovative and versatile prototype will be installed this month in 3C’s Clayton, NC, plant.

This design provides the highest cutting load (1000gsm) with excellent cut quality. Many Marquip knives are working regularly on material up to 4000gsm, and recent innovations see this unit equally at home on lightweight paper with customers cutting down to 24gsm.

With an industry-leading speed curve, on-machine knife sharpening and the lowest power consumption of any comparable cutting head, the MarquipWardUnited knife answers and exceeds the new levels of market demand for output and quality.

The TSKM maximizes the benefit of the knife with an equally advanced sheet delivery system. The technology to deliver sheets at high speed without damage has existed for many years; it has, however, been restricted to mill class machinery only. The challenge for the TSKM team was to adapt this technology into an affordable package that also suits the short run, fast size change needs of modern converters.

To increase production with the TSKM, an all new pallet change system was developed for use on paper and board that does not require the machine to stop or reject a single sheet. A combination of speed curve, high sheet delivery speeds and maximum up-time at pallet change allows more sheets per hour to be cut. Folding carton manufacturers have, for many years, suffered and used a pallet turner to centralize the sheets on the pallet. One clever feature of the TSKM auto pallet change system allows new pallets to be automatically positioned on the stacker table such that the sheets are stacked centrally on the pallet. This single feature eliminates an entire machine and extraneous operation between the sheeter and the press.
