How the "recession" is affecting you

April 22, 2008

Whether President Bush wants to call it a recession or not, the economic slowdown by whatever name is starting to affect your business. According to our Website poll, nearly two-thirds of you said that it’s having a significant or moderate impact on your package-printing and/or converting business. And around one in eight said the effects are mild right now.

On the other hand, about a quarter of you agreed with the statement, "What economic slowdown?" when given a choice of responses, basically saying "No impact."

So, beyond being just a kind of barometer for how things are going, our poll may show the early signs of a real recession. Because our business is far enough up the supply chain, if CPGs and other customers are cutting back now on packaging, they’re forecasting primarily consumer purchase cutbacks down the line–a real red flag for a recession. Fortunately, the opposite is true. If your business picks up again this summer–or hopefully doesn’t decline at all–that should be a sign of better times to come.

If we must endure a recession, the shorter and shallower the sweeter. How are things at your company? Send me a comment below or email me at mspaulding@reedbusiness.com

Gee, let's see...My company is closing plants, laying off people by the hundreds, losing millions of dollars in the past quarter. Yeah, I'd say the "recession" is affecting us.

I love the Harper optimism. Word is from friends in the business, suppliers and others that we are in bad times or recession. Bush just today said that times are tough.

Mark, Things have never been better! We continue to strive to improve quality, processes, internally and externally. People must realize, this is not a recession. For years, the writing has been on the wall, it will be a globally competitive world. Those experiencing a recession are experiencing resistance to change. Believing in their own advertising. Best Regards, Jim

We have seen a tremendous amount of activity for new projects, but PO's are few and far between as compared to this time last year.
