Corrosion of aluminum by sauce
June 11, 2009
Q: I’m just wondering why a particular packaging use for sauces requires a structure of PET12/alufoil 9/PET 12/PE 85. Does the additional PET-film substrate between foil and PE serve as an additional barrier or for additional stiffness?
A: I would suspect that the extra PET layer is to add chemical barrier to the structure to protect the aluminum foil from the corrosion effects of the sauce, which might be low (or high) pH. Without the PET film, the corrosive chemical migration to the aluminum/PE interface would not be prevented by the PE, as it has little to no chemical barrier and would not protect the aluminum from corrosion.
