How CMM plans to get even better
January 9, 2008
Earlier today, I met with the new managers of CMM Intl., who provided a sneak peek at what's in their plans to make the resurgent trade show even better when it runs again in June 2009. MaryBeth DeWitt takes over for former CMM director Jim Enos (who has left PennWell) and will work closely with Richard Baker, vp of PennWell's Global Energy Group. Together, the two have more than 20 years of trade show and publishing experience.
Among the improvements:
1. A new Folding Carton Technology Ctr., similar to last year's highly successful Flexible Packaging Tech Ctr., will mimic the complete production process with printing press, diecutter, folder/gluer, etc. The Label & Narrow Web Tech Ctr. will also make a comeback.
2. More educational opportunities, possibly in the form of technical sessions scheduled just before the show opens. This is in addition to the regular at-show conference program.
3. More networking opportunities beyond last year's exhibitor and attendee "hors d'oeuvres and live music" events.
4. A give-away for attendees based on gathering stamps from several exhibitors on a "passport," then turning in the passport to qualify in a drawing for a major prize such as a motorcycle or automobile.
For what is still the capital-equipment show for package-printing and converting, these and other ideas are bound to make the industry's major show more accessible, more valuable and more like the CMMs of years past.

It’s good to see that the industry is recognizing that CMM is strengthening its role as the leading converting event in North America. The Tech Centers at CMM in 2007 brought running machinery back on the show floor, and it’s great that a Folding Carton Tech Center will be added in 2009.
