Fuel surcharges rule!
May 21, 2008

In Chicago, we have the unenviable favor of paying the highest gas prices in America--about $4.35 a gallon for the ever-popular regular unleaded variety. While this is due in large measure to the state's (and City of Chicago's) retail-sales taxes added to all the other taxes on gas, it does make driving anything even more expensive, especially trucks.

Our latest Website Poll asked, "How are record gas and diesel fuel prices affecting your business?" Fully half of you said, "We are adding fuel surcharges to our outgoing shipments." Nearly 40% said you're paying fuel surcharges for incoming shipments, and the rest are biting the bullet--for now--by not adding fuel surcharges to your shipments and consequently cutting your margins.

Now, with the price of oil topping $133 a barrel the other day, gas and diesel prices will only go higher. Is your company ready to handle $5/gal gas and $6/gal diesel? Will we all be both paying and charging fuel surcharges to make ends meet? Send me a comment below or e-mail now to mspaulding@reedbusiness.com
