My kind of club
"Calling all Monday Morning Quarterbacks." As the 2008 NFL season is about to begin, where will I be every week? No, not just in front of the TV watching games on Saturdays, Sundays, Mondays...and the occasional Thursday. I'll also be in front of the computer, playing in the 6th annual Sartomer Co. Pro Football Experts Club.
Sartomer, the US maker of specialty chemicals for coatings, inks and adhesives, sponsors this yearly, free contest that doesn't really require you to be an "expert" in football to play...or to win. You simply go to the Website, register, and then pick whichever teams you think will win the various 15 or so games that particular week. Weekly winners receive autographed mini-helmets from the season's top NFL stars. Gift certificates to NFLshop.com are issued to weekly runners-up. Almost 1,000 people took part in last year's club.
I had to ask marcomm manager Jim Zawicki why Sartomer sponsors the club. "Is your CEO a rabid football fan or what?" Turns out the company that provides the game, Athlon Sports, was a long-time customer for its print publications before getting into online stuff. "We just felt it was a fun thing to do, and it builds camaraderie among co-workers and with customers," he says.
Not sure who to pick for opening weekend Sept. 7-8? A panel of "experts," consisting of three Sartomer employees who did well with the game last season as well as an Athlon Sports staffer, will post their recommendations weekly.
So, I'm ready to play. Maybe I'll be lucky...just like last year's Grand Prize winner, a Mrs. Bronwyn Weber of Wisconsin, who took home the top prize of an official jersey, signed by Barry Sanders of the Detroit Lions.
If I do win, I'll ask for Brett Favre's new New York Jets jersey...quick before he retires again.
