What will Super Tuesday decide for converters?
February 5, 2008

Twenty-two states hold their Presidential primaries today. The outcome may determine this far in advance of the political conventions who the Democratic and Republican nominees will be. But what will Super Tuesday likely decide for converters?

First, let's look at the results of our Weekly Website Poll question (as of Monday evening): Which of the following Presidential candidates, if elected, would be best for the package-printing and converting industries? Mitt Romney came in first with 35% of the vote; John McCain was second with 20%; Barack Obama made third with 15%; and Hillary Clinton, Mike Huckabee (and the elusive "Someone Else") all tied for fourth with 10% of the tally.

It seems clear that if Mitt Romney or John McCain was ultimately elected, the status quo would be in order for the federal government's response to and support of business in general, including the converting industry. The impact of environmental legislation and EPA/OSHA regulation may be heightened as the pendulum swings a bit back toward the middle from President Bush's far-right, hands-off attitude.

If either Hillary Clinton or Barack Obama was elected, be prepared (especially with the Democrats in charge of both houses of Congress) for a radical shift. Obama is so new, his business ties are almost non-existent, and he talks a good "anti-business" game. Hillary Clinton is, on the other hand, linked with a longer history through her husband of being more "pro-business." On the environmental side of things, though, get ready for a much more proactive EPA either way, and all that that means for VOC and clean-water regulations that can hit your operation hard.

Consider this though. True EHS professionals that have the training, skills and credentials are not working for government unless they have issues or are on a power trip of some sort. My area of responsibility is the SW US. During the past 24 or so months, I've had OSHA & EPA show up usually with a chip on their shoulder. I've sent them packing each and every time as they know good and well that their citations will never match-up to my level of expertise in a hearing. "Game, set, & match" even before they left the facility. On one occasion one of the "compliance" officers came in wanting a pissing match; he got it. On this particular federal project, the guy really, really got bent on the ID check for admission to the site......... Did you know that FBI agents have no sense of humor whatsoever?
