Whole Foods Markets to sack plastic bags

Mark Spaulding -- Converting Magazine, 1/28/2008

BYOB will have a slightly different meaning starting Earth Day (April 22) at Whole Foods Markets.

The Austin, TX-based grocery chain will eliminate plastic bags at checkouts, opting instead for only 100% recycled paper bags and also advising shoppers to BYOB—“Bring Your Own Bag, Save Your Own Planet.” The company will sell a selection of reusable bags at its stores—including the 99-cent “Better Bag” made from recycled plastic bottles. (see photo above). To further encourage the switch to reusables, Whole Foods will also refund shoppers at least 5 cents per bag.

The major retailer of natural and organic foods has 270 stores across North America and the UK.
