International Paper shuts down its No. 2 paper machine at the Albany Mill in Oregon for a minimum of three months. This machine produces approximately 250,000 tons/yr of containerboard. Approximately 40 workers are impacted by the shutdown.
Says Glenn Landau, vp-gm, IP Containerboard & Recycling business, “This is a necessary near-term decision made in light of continuing high input costs, current economic conditions and our commitment to match our production to our customers' needs."
The company will continue to monitor economic conditions as they evolve and will revisit the operating status of the machine early in 2009, Landau adds.
Previously, IP said that it will shutdown its No. 3 paper machine at the Valliant Mill in Oklahoma on Nov. 1. This machine produces about 430,000 tons/yr of containerboard. Sixty jobs at that mill will be affected.
