Modular slitter/rewinder, compact barcode scanner, and more

Editor: Natalie Hasselbacher -- Converting Magazine, 8/1/2008

Modular slitter/rewinder

For broad range of sensitive, flexible materials

Co.'s Titan SR8, a modular, high-performance, twin-shafted, cantilever slitter/rewinder uses a high level of technology for improved web guidance and web- handling capabilities for a broad range of sensitive, flexible materials. Depending on the materials being processed, running speeds of up to 2,300 fpm are attainable for web widths of 41-to 53- in., while speeds of up to 1,950 fpm for wider widths up to 72 in. are reachable. The machine offers three web-path configurations to meet converters' specific requirements and slitting applications.

Compact barcode scanner

Decodes damaged or normally unreadable codes

The new VB6-240 barcode scanner has a footprint of just 0.86 x 1.18 x 1.57 in., making it one of the smallest scanners available today. With a 0.15-mm resolution, the scanner can read extremely small labels, and productivity is said to be increased by 30 perent when compared to its competitors. It is said to operate at speeds of up to 1,200 scans/sec. The VB6-240 features a built-in ACR (Automatic Code Reconstruction) software algorithm that allows for decoding of damaged or normally unreadable codes. Installation and configuration are done with ease thanks to the scanner's compact size and test operating mode that features a built-in bargraph display.

CI-flexo printing press

With automated sleeve-handling system

The new VISTAFLEX C printing press can be fitted with 8 or 10 color decks and is designed for print repeats of up to 49.2 in. and print widths of up to 86.6 in. The press has a maximum print speed of 2,600 fpm. The core of this new design is the VISTA-PORT, an automatic sleeve-handling system with exchangeable sleeve mandrels, which makes job changeovers faster and more reliable, co. says. Automated sleeve handling allows for optimal positioning of the new mandrels in the magazine and reportedly the shortest set-up time for all of the required color decks.

High-speed web dryer

Fits patterned adhesives, coatings

The Macrowave™ RF drying system is said to selectively heat only the patterned coatings on the web, leaving the bound moisture in the substrate intact. This function prevents over-drying, distortion and shrinking. The system needs only one-third to one-fifth of the floor space required for most hot-air and IR dryers. It also permits lower web temperatures and provides up to 80 percent savings in energy, co. says. Unlike conventional heating methods, the Macrowave™ RF eliminates long dwell times, causing a reduction in make-ready because RF power is instant on/off. Energy consumption is required only with a load in the system, which handles webs up to 120 in.-wide.

Rotary punching modules

For airlaid materials

With improved technology, co.'s new rotary modules are capable of producing clear-hole perforation patterns with small hole diameters. Hole sizes, perforation patterns and production speeds vary depending on the particular application and are developed according to customer needs. Long service life and more efficient production runs are ensured through the matched, hard-metal, rotary technology and high-end, raw materials for punches and dies.

Motion-control unit

Reduces wiring, cuts costs

Co.'s new STM Drive+Motor solution fuses a stepper drive and motor unit into one device that is said to help save on space, wiring and costs when compared to conventional motors and drives. The unit features advanced current control, anti-resonance technology, torque ripple smoothing and microstep emulation. The STM delivers optimized stepper performance for packaging and a wide variety of other automation applications, co. says. Protection against over- and undervoltage, over-temp, motor shorts and motor open phase is standard on all STM Drive+Motor units. Available in lengths of 92.4 mm or 114.4 mm, the unit provides three digital inputs, one digital output and one analog input.

Mobile die press

Scores, perforates sheeted materials

Co.'s new Perf-N-Crease mobile unit can adjust to most makes and models of folding machines, helping to produce high-quality die-press scoring and perforating. Adjusting down the slitter shafts to accept folded sheets from the folder is also possible. Double shafts for combined operations or two-stage creasing are available for sensitive or difficult materials.

Label-film overlaminate

Offers alternative to polycarbonate

The DPM® CVE overlaminate is a UV-resistant, polyolefin-film designed for outdoor durable labels. It offers a velvet-textured finish and the same performance as traditional polycarbonate overlaminates at a lower cost, co says. It is designed to increase the life-span of nameplate/brand identification and warning/instruction labels in a number of markets, including hand tools, power tools, heavy equipment, industrial caution and warning, outdoor power equipment, sporting goods and automotive exteriors.

Labelstock ordering program

Speeds delivery of non-adhesives

Fast face, co.'s new ordering program, is said to help labelstock converters receive lower-volume, custom-slit orders of non-adhesive products in the rapid delivery time cycles that support specific business requirements. Rather than waiting several weeks for deliveries of small-volume, non-adhesive product orders, labelstock converters will have an opportunity to operate at the “speed-of-market” with Fast Face, co. says.

Mechatronic toolkit

Designed for motion system design

Co.'s new MechaWare 3.0 integrates mechanical systems and control-software design, resulting in faster design cycles, superior motion-system performance and faster time-to-market. The toolkit's special purpose involves motion-system design, enabling software and mechanical engineers to work together in designing, testing and modifying custom-motion algorithms in a fraction of the time and cost of conventional methods. MechaWare 3.0 features include comprehensive capture, logging and visualization tools that allow mechanical, I/O and software data to be integrated into one measurement area. MechaWare is said to deliver a streamlined workflow between control-model development and real-time machine testing.

Reversible doctor-winder

Features 65 in. web width

The newest addition to co.'s extensive line of Doctor Machines® features a 65-in.-wide, reversible machine with a 40-in. unwind and rewind diameter capability. It operates at speeds of up to 600 mpm and with a tension range of 48 to 175 N/m. The machine is said to be capable of running materials from thin films through paper and multilayer laminations. It has a level of versatility unique to the market, co. says, because of the optional razor- or shear-trimming availability, as well as a facility for overhead print inspection. Its most notable feature is the newly designed linear rider rolls, which are said to offer fully programmable and constant pressure throughout roll buildup.
