Alternative to all-plastic clamshell; slitter/rewinder controls; printable films swatchbook; and more

Chief Editor: Mark Spaulding -- Converting Magazine, 6/1/2008

Recycled-content paperboard with thermoform

Alternative to all-plastic clamshells easier to open

Natralock® combines laminated paperboard and a transparent APET or RPET thermoform for a PVC-clamshell alternative. Reportedly using 50- to 60-percent less plastic, it can include up to 50 percent recycled content. A clear bubble keeps the product visible and is surrounded by glare-free paperboard that eliminates the need for printed inserts. Co. says Natralock withstands the same shipping and handling as clamshells but is easier to open with scissors after purchased.

Slitter/rewinder controls

Line upgrade includes new system options

Co. updates controls on its VSR line of slitter/rewinders with a Rockwell Automation system, featuring a menu-driven, full-color, touchscreen interface. “Servo mode” main drive and rewind tension inside the system are said to improve web control, and upgraded diagnostics allow the supplier to troubleshoot and service remotely. Newly available VSR options include differential coreholders and pneumatic nip rolls for web-tension control as well as a 100% vision inspection system and a web advance arm.

Printable films swatchbook

Ultra Green tree-free material debuts

Co.'s new Ultra Film® printable films swatchbook introduces Ultra Green 100% Tree-Free Film, composed of inorganic stone and manufactured without the use of water, bleach or toxic chemicals. Other materials featured are Low-Peel/Repositionable Vinyl, Window Cling Vinyl, Styrene, Ultra Synthetic Paper, Ultra Green Film Tree-Free Paper and Rigid Vinyl. Each sample includes a product description with advantages, limitations and applications. The swatchbook was printed offset on a MAN Roland 706 with UV inks and gloss coating.

Extruding mixer

Low heat, low shear

The nXmix™ operates inline with a conventional single- or twin-screw extruder to disperse additives and fillers thoroughly yet at low shear and temperature levels. An incised rotor reduces viscosity before a rotor and stator—each designed with pockets in a helical configuration—generate elongational flow with thorough mixing. Co. says degradation of heat-sensitive fillers such as wood fibers or PVC is minimized. Recommended applications are traditional production of compounded resins and master-batch and inline compounding of highly filled materials.

Edge-guided unwind stand

Constant tension control

Said to handle stiffer substrates, automatic edge guiding for the S-800C-DES-EG unwind stand is steered by a linear actuator and edge-of-web sensor. Tension control consists of a compensating drum brake and a dancer mounted on a pivoting dancer arm controlled by two air cylinders. A feedback cable connects the dancer arm to the brake, reportedly enabling precise control while running without complex electronics. Rolls up to 30 in. both in diameter and width are unwound from a removable, chuck-secured air shaft.

Multi-diameter core cutter

Automatic core loading

The Stingray high-speed, multi-diameter core cutter is said to handle cores up to 10 ft. in length and 2 to 10 in. in diameter with wall thicknesses up to .75 in. Featuring automatic core loading, the machine will be available in August. The co.'s core cutter line already includes tabletop, semi-automatic and fully programmable models.

Slitter knifeholder

Mono-block cuts vibration

A new Espo line of slitting products provides high quality of cut, longer blade life, and minimized dust. Patented knifeholders boast features that improve performance. Mono-block design ensures system rigidity and reduces vibration at high speeds. A rotative head allows cutting on either side of the anvil. A patented spring-loaded flange maintains appropriate pressure between the knife and the anvil, creating the same benefits as a flexible-head design without excess blade tilt against the anvil. The new Genius holder executes three cutting methods (shear, crush, razor); separate holders are no longer needed. Various knife-positioning systems, from manual to fully automatic, are available.

Length measurement

Non-contact consistency

The LaserSpeed Series measures the length of wound products to an accuracy of +/-0.125 percent or better. Non-contact operation eliminates slippage, dirt build-up, and day-to-day wear problems faced by mechanical tachometers. Maintenance is also reduced by its lack of moving parts. Using Laser Doppler Velocimetry and a DataPro™ controller, the gauge is certified by MID (Measuring Instrument Directive of the European Community).

Non-corrugated paperboards

Multilayer strength, flute-free view

Co.'s 2-ply Glacier and 3-ply Forte Blanc™ are designed as alternatives to plastic and corrugated signage and point-of-purchase displays. Glacier has bright white semi-gloss SBS boards on both sides, and Forte Blanc™ features a kraft core with 90 bright blue-white semi-gloss SBS board on one side and uncoated white matte board on the other. No fluting means superior print quality. Both boards are available at .036 caliper, and Glacier also comes at custom .032 caliper, Forte Blanc™ at 0.031.

Liquid adhesive guns

250-Hz continuous cycling

The LA 825 and LA 825 RC liquid adhesive guns feature a 250-Hz continuous cycle rate and stroke adjustment independent to each gun for improved flow control. Designed for folding-carton production, the RC line's reduced cavity produces sharp cutoff and clean operation while its elongated nozzle brings the bead closer to the carrier. Both models are reported to offer great application flexibility with their narrow profiles and capacity for multiple configurations.

Expanding core chucks

Selection fits many unwinders/rewinders

Using an air- or spring-driven internal piston, the pneumatic-mechanical 1420 series is recommended for heavy weights or systems needing perfect centering. Models 1440-RC and 1440-LG use external and internal tire bladders, respectively, and the multiple-bladder 1460-LDX can be made in any length. Designed for torque handling, the 1480-LFTX carries leaves that expand outward during rotation. The 1480-LGAX responds to machine sidearm pressure and is available with optional internal ball bearings.

Hard digital-flexo plate

Rated at 60 durometer

Digital MAX is the digital counterpart to co.'s recently debuted 60-durometer MAX flexographic-printing plate. Said to deliver excellent drape and low tack as well as fine resolution and detail, the photopolymer plate can be processed either using co.'s LAVA thermal system or with solvent. Digital MAX is available in thicknesses from .030 in. to .112 in. and format sizes up to 52 x 80 in.

Mechanical core chuck

Quick-change adapter collars

The QuickGrip torque-activated mechanical core chucks for shaftless unwinding and rewinding use quick-change adapter collars for larger-core sizes. This system lets users change core sizes without tools. The adapters, with a 3-in. base chuck, cover a complete range of core sizes from 4 to 12 in., and they expand automatically when the web is tensioned or as the roll rotates, and handle rolls weighing up to 8,800 lbs.
