Rolls & Rollers

Editor: Jorina Fontelera -- Converting Magazine, 11/1/2007

Versatile idler roll

The WINertia™ AV rollers can handle running on encoders, rewinders, high-speed printers and converting equipment with web speeds from 500 to 3,400 fpm. And, compared to spiral-grooved rolls, the WINertia™ AV gets the air out 7.5 times faster and has 15 times the air parking capacity.

Line screens up to 3,500 per linear inch

Co. employs its Platinum® XLT™ technology to build the Platinum XLT anilox and coating-roll system, enabling package printers and converters to print line screens up to 3,500 per linear inch. Higher line counts and higher volumes are aimed at making combination plate printing more viable and single anilox engraving much more flexible to satisfy a variety of print types, co. says. The Harper® XLT™ anilox program can reporedly reduce overall anilox inventories, as well.

HARPER CORP. OF AMERICA, 800/438-3111, fax: 704/588-3819, www.harperimage.com

Disposable roll coverings

Co. offers a full line of disposable roll coverings for corona treating, web cleaning, traction and release applications. The coverings come in a wide range of diameters and lengths to fit each roller size.

Surface rollers

To facilitate moving rolls on and off the air-shaft body per OSHA-recommended upper limit of forces for horizontal pushing and pulling, co. has designed ergonomic surface rollers. The surface rollers are a fixed-height assembly of low-friction wheels that minimize the initial force and sustained force when moving a roll onto a cantilevered air shaft. They are designed to slide into one or more of the existing slots in co.'s external bladder models.

Tough rubber rolls

Co. offers multiple rolls to serve the coating and laminating, non-woven, and flexo and corrugated industries. Its premium ARI rubber compounds are resistant to UV inks, solvents, water, ozone and virtually all chemicals, co. says. They have been designed to prevent premature roller deterioration by meeting specific re-cover and fabrication needs. Co. also developed the LMS 3000, a non-contact, four-axis, laser-scan micrometer system for high-precision coating rolls.

v Tension-roll transducer

Co.'s new SR Segmented Tension Roll transducer, shown at CMM Intl. 2007, is an extension of co.'s Tension Roll® Transducer—a dead-shaft idler roll with integrated tension sensors at the roll's end. The SR Segmented roll lets converters measure tension on multiple individual web strands in a slitting/rewinding environment or at multiple points across the width of a single web when converting or rewinding film. If found early enough, minor gauge-band variations across a substrate can sometimes be compensated for in-process. By monitoring and controlling tension, slight defects in roll stock do not automatically translate into a defective finished product, co. says.

Roll plating and finishing

Looking to refinish a roll? Co. offers grinding and finishing services for high-precision rolls used in web coating and calendaring applications. It can precision-grind rolls to 48 in. in diameter with lengths exceeding 200 in. Parabolic crowning—concave and convex—as well as straight-tapered crowing are available. Co. also provides optical mirror rolls finished at 0.2 Ra and less, and it offers .004-in.-thick nickel under chromium for corrosion applications.

Vacuum roll assembly

Designed to eliminate dangerous in-running nips that can produce and iron-in web wrinkles, co. launches its Vacuum Roll Assembly capable of 5 PLI tension isolation capacity at 180-deg wrap, regardless of web width. Offered with anti-friction pillow block bearings, vacuum rotary union, flex hose, 5-hp blower with exhaust and mounting stand, the unit contains no deckles or nips.

Engraved anilox rolls

Co. offers two types of laser-engraved anilox rolls: Laserflo™ and Thermaflo™. Laserflo uses traditional CO2 laser-engraving, offering 28 to 32 percent depth-to-opening ratios and industry-standard screen count and volume ranges. Thermaflo uses the latest multi-hit thermal YAG system, offering a much wider range of screen and volume combinations, suitable for converters wanting to move to high-screen and high-volume configurations.

v Vacuum rolls

Isoten vacuum rolls grip one side of a coated or adhesive-treated web for better control in transporting or pulling wet webs and/or isolating web tension. The roll shells include a tungsten-carbide, plasma-release coating and optional roll coverings such as polymer compounds, stainless-steel mesh screen, felt and gravure seamless screen. Diameters up to 160 in., with web wrap angles from 30 to 180 deg, are available.

Roll alignment adjuster

Align rollers, shafts and web-handling systems with co.'s roll adjuster, also available with its Laser Microgage alignment system. The adjuster is placed on top of a master roller to capture the digital position of the first roll or shaft. The adjuster then is moved to the next roller for alignment, and moved to successive rolls for additional measurements and adjustments. Applications include presses, bag lines, coaters and others.

PINPOINT LASER SYSTEMS, INC., 800/757-5383, fax: 978/462-3561, www.pinlaser.com

Felt rolls run upright, inverted

Co.'s felt rolls come with custom-bearing housings that allow for upright or inverted configurations. The rolls arrive ready for installation with assembled bearings, reducing the time required to change and install rolls. Installation is said to not require modification of existing machinery, framework or bearing lubrication hoses. The rolls can handle speeds up to 10,000 fpm. Bolt-on journals for easy maintenance and alloy steel journals for heavy-weight applications are available.
