Static elimination & web cleaning

Editor: Jorina Fontelera -- Converting Magazine, 10/1/2007

New patented web cleaner runs thin materials

Co. receives another patent for its web and parts cleaning systems. The new face plate designs covered by this patent allow the web cleaners to handle extremely thin materials such as tissue paper and thin plastic film at very slow to very high line speeds. Also, webs with low to high tension can be cleaned without damage to the web, co. says. The web cleaners are available for any web width and include active static-control equipment.

Static-control system handles 2,500-fpm speeds

The new PerforMAX 3 can eliminate static charges even when installed 2 to 10 in. from webs (depending on conditions) and up to 20 in. on winders. It is capable of neutralizing charged materials traveling up to 2,500 fpm. The system is available in three configurations: standard with remote monitoring and control of ionization performance, clean bar, system fault indicators and remote on/off control capability; computer interface for remote computer monitoring and data acquisition; and hazardous location system for classes I, II and III environments.

Wide air knife is super-quiet

Co.'s new 48-in. Super Air Knife provides wide surface coverage for cleaning, drying or cooling webs or conveyors. At 80 PSIG, the sound level is extremely quiet at 69 dBA, a noise level 11 times quieter than traditional blowoffs. The air knife creates a uniform sheet of air across the entire length that immediately pulls in surrounding room air, producing an air amplification ratio (entrained air to compressed air) of 40:1. The resulting air savings is 63 percent, compared to typical blowoffs, co. says. Multiple units can be mounted end-to-end without dead spots and various lengths, from 3 to 48 in., are available in aluminum or stainless steel.

Contact idler roll cleans both webs, sheets

Co.'s web cleaning systems are designed to remove contaminants, such as slitting dust and converting debris, from a broad range of both web or sheet substrates as well as converting-process rolls. Polymag® Web and Sheet Cleaners were developed around the contact cleaning roll (CCR)—an idler roll covered with a specialized proprietary polymer that picks off the loose surface contamination from the substrate with its tacky surface. CCRs are said to clean more efficiently than conventional non-contact devices such as vacuum, ultrasonic, brush and vacuum, or cloth-wipe methods. Particles less than 1 micron are easily removed.

Static neutralizer works in hazardous locations

The HL-Type Virtual AC™ Static Neutralizer is engineered to provide long-range static neutralization for coating operations, where flammable vapors could potentially cause fires when exposed to electrostatic discharge. It also comes with a new fieldbus interface capability that makes possible full integration of the static neutralizers into an existing process-control system over an industrial network. A solid-state power supply and controller constantly monitor the performance of the static bars.MKS, ION INDUSTRIAL, 888/310-3334, www.ion.com/industrial

Contact web cleaner does single-, double-sided jobs

The WWCMR contact web cleaner is designed for wide-web applications, with web widths ranging from 40 to 82 in. With its multi-roll system, handling weights are kept to a minimum to provide an ergonomic environment. It runs at web speeds up to 1,640 fpm and features double- or single-sided cleaning, twin adhesive rolls with side pull access and built-in anti-static equipment. To accommodate high-contamination environments, the WWCMR can be equipped with a vacuum pre-cleaner to reduce adhesive change and handling costs.
