Slitter Rewinder Technology

-- Converting Magazine, 9/1/2007

Knife positioning system

Co.'s automatic knife positioning systems are available in score, shear and razor slitting. The shear unit is capable of a minimum 0.5-in. slit width and web-through design is offered. The male and females are set at the same time to reduce setup time, and optimization programs are available to reduce scrap and trim.

Inspection rewinder

The VSR line of inspection rewinders for slitting and finishing of substrates and printed rolls features a wide-open concept which allows the operator to easily see the unwind and rewind rolls while inspecting. The proximity of the slitter cartridge to the rewind and the use of separator rings ensure effective winding of narrow slit webs, co. says. The addition of capacitive sensors and a razor slitter cartridge make the machine ideal for inspection of clear-on-clear labels.

Surface rollers

To facilitate moving rolls on and off the air shaft body per OSHA-recommended upper limit of forces for horizontal pushing and pulling, co. has designed ergonomic surface rollers. The surface rollers are a fixed-height assembly of low-friction wheels that minimize the initial force and sustained force when moving a roll onto a cantilevered air shaft. They are designed to slide into one or more of the existing slots in co.'s external bladder models.

Slitter positioning system

The QUIK-SET system moves all knife- holders simultaneously with high-accuracy placement via touchscreen computer control. It can change all holders in 5 to 15 seconds with position accuracies to +/-0.008 in. If a slitting location change is needed, QUIK-SET can reposition individual holders while maintaining the cutting action with the web running.

Knifeholder

The Gold Series knifeholder can make slits as small as 2 in. into weights up to 800 gsm at speeds up to 5,000 fpm. It features a calibrated depth knob for precise blade-anvil overlap and tool-free cant angle adjustment. These characteristics reduce dust, increase blade life, ensure maximum spatial nip-point stability and increase the quality of the cut.

Two-drum surface winder

The new Model 210 drum surface winder minimizes downtime and maximizes labor hours with its flexibility, roll quality control and fast changeovers via an auto slit-positioning feature. The unit slits materials from newsprint to paperboard to nonwovens. Slit separation is achieved with a single or dual bowed roll. Auto-eject and lowering table provides rapid removal of finished rolls.

Shaft handling machine

The ESH-300-PEC and ESH-500-PEC are portable, battery-powered shaft-handling machines with 300- and 500-lb capacities, respectively. Electrically actuated clamps hold the air shaft journal end. The clamp tooling can be adapted, without tools, to handle multiple shafts. Plastic anvils cradle the shaft in the tooling.

Carbon-fiber core shafts

Fitted with steel or aluminum ends, co.'s carbon-fiber core shafts are similar in weight to aluminum shafts and can be lifted and handled by a single operator. Shafts are available with a variety of button sizes, leaves and plain or serrated lugs to suit any application. Winding configurations, fiber modulus ratings, composite resins and curing cycles for each shaft are all controlled within co.'s ISO-certified winding operation.

Rewinds/unwinds

Co.'s rewind and unwind units can be simple single-position, single-spindle units or turret systems with automated splicing and transfer capabilities in shaft or shaftless designs. Unwinds can be center-braked, center- or surface-driven. Rewinds can be center- or surface-driven or a combination of both. Available in 1.5 to over 100 in. wide with a roll diameter up to 72 in., these units can be cantilevered dual frame or lift arm, depending on application needs.

Air-roll-lock differential shaft

Recent advances to its air-roll-lock differential shaft simplify the converting process, co. says. Using an internal clutch to control tension eliminates operator error and can improve roll quality. Co. also adds Glidelock rollers to its shafts to ease the unloading process. The Glidelock also auto-locks to equalize tension on multiple-width cores.
