Blades, Knives & Knifeholders

Associate Editor: Jorina Fontelera -- Converting Magazine, 7/1/2007

Slitting products

Co. launches its Espo line of knifeholders, positioning systems and knives. The mono-block design is said to ensure system rigidity and reduce vibration at high speeds. A rotative head allows cutting on either side of the anvil and a spring-loaded flange maintains appropriate pressure between the knife and anvil. The new Genius holder can shear, crush and razor-cut, making separate holders unnecessary. Various knife-positioning systems, from manual to fully automatic, are also available.

Crush-cut knifeholder

The PQG crush-cut knifeholder is compatible with various mounting arrangements and compatible with all machine designs, co. says. It can handle high slitting speeds and comes with co.'s QUICK-CLAMP™ device which allows operators to change the head without tools.

Doctor blades

Swed/Cut® doctor blades can be custom-engineered for specific applications. Through co.'s partnerships with flexo and gravure printers, it has developed a number of proprietary methods to create consistently smooth lamella, beveled and radius edges. For example, the transition zone of its lamella edge is gradual rather than steep to allow the tip to flex without breaking. It also developed MicroKote®, a surface coating that prevents large particulates in the ink from collecting behind the blade. This is said to reduce streaks and other blade-related print defects.

Knifeholder

The Gold Series pneumatic shear-slitting knifeholder slits webs down to 2 in. wide, handles material weights up to 800 gsm and runs at speeds up to 5,000 fpm. It can be used with paper, coated papers, fine printing papers, foils, paperboard, chrome-coated and poly-coated materials, films and non-wovens. The holder features a calibrated depth knob for precise blade-anvil overlap and tool-free cant angle adjustment.
