Flex-Pack Maker Vaassen Splices Thin Foils at 2,600 fpm via New Polytype Line

With the recent installation of a new Polytype Converting AG (www.polytype.com) laminating/lacquering machine (at right), Dutch converter Vaassen Flexible Packaging BV (www.vfp.nl) reportedly runs 6.3-micron-thick aluminum foils on the equipment, splicing rolls automatically at speeds of 2,600 fpm.
The line, which also provides pre- and post-lacquering of paper for subsequent metallization, consists of two fully automatic unwinds, three coating heads with different coating methods, turner bars, two hot-air flotation dryers, one fully automatic rewinder, and a state-of-the-art human-machine interface. Delivered in a record-setting 10 months' time from contract signing, the Polytype system features seven web paths and quick cleaning/washing sub-equipment for the coating heads.
Vaassen Flexible Packaging specializes in finished materials based on foil, paper and plastic films. A subsidiary of Clondalkin Group, it serves the tobacco, dairy and other products markets and employs 235 workers.
