Applications Watch

Editor: Mark Spaulding -- Converting Magazine, 8/1/2006

The installation of a servo-driven Nilpeter FA-4 UV-flexo press (www.nilpeter.com) is expected to enhance the services offered by The Label Makers, Ltd. (Bradford, England). The 16.5-in.-wide press, valued at $1.1 million, is also reportedly the first FA-Line modular press for labels and packaging running in the UK. Besides eight UV-flexo units, the configuration includes two "Drop-In" rotary-screen units for positioning anywhere within the press line, and a cold-foiling device for metallic printed effects. Direct servo drives are used for the web infeed, print cylinders and diecutting stations. Servo drives also facilitate multi-substrate printing.

College Park, GA-based flex-pack maker Star Packaging purchases a Premius Digital 3 Chip print-process management system from BST Pro Mark (www.bstpromark.com). The unit was installed on a new 8-color Primaflex® CI-flexo press from Windmoeller & Hoelscher (www.whcorp.com) in July. "Our objective with this system is to reduce print defects and to manage improved print quality by increasing our print web inspection by a factor of 9," says Gavin Cook, Star QC manager.

Flex-pack converter Packall Packaging, Inc. (Brampton, Ontario, Canada) purchases a 9-layer AquaFrost blown-film line from neighborhood supplier Brampton Engineering (www.be-ca.com). The partnership will reportedly be the first commercial installation in North America of BE's AquaFrost technology. Startup is scheduled for late October. Packall, which converts and prints flex-pack rollstock, has both a monolayer, and 7- and 9-layer BE lines. The company also makes standup and zippered pouches.
