Coater Laminator Technology

Associate Editor: Jorina Fontelera -- Converting Magazine, 6/1/2006

Electron-beam adhesive

Co.'s new family of electron-beam-curable laminating adhesives is solvent-free and of one-component formulation. The materials can be applied at room temperature using gravure, flexo and multi-roll coaters. Full bond strength is achieved instantly upon EB curing. The adhesives are said to have excellent bonding with low-density polyethylene, polyester, barrier polypropylene, metallized films, foil and paperboard.

UV-curable coating for multi-wall bags

Craigcoat 1077NSA—a non-skid, high-gloss, UV-curable coating for multi-wall and paper bags—controls face-to-face skid problems common among pet foods, charcoal and fertilizer bags. It contains no volatile organic compounds (VOCs), provides chemical resistance, fast cure and is odorless. It has nearly twice the gloss of solvent-based coatings, co. says.

UV-curable resin

Said to be ideal for food-packaging applications, new DREWRAD150 UV-curable resin has extremely low levels of extractable compounds upon UV-cure and can be cured without the use of photo-initiators. The resin can cure into a flexible substrate as a soft, flexible material with good adhesion or can be manipulated to cure as a hard, rigid material for durable surface protection.

Topslit slitter/rewinder

The Goebel topslit slitter/rewinder can handle narrow-width rolls with a diameter of up to 50 in. at speeds up to 4,000 fpm. Its unsupported simplex center drive system allows for a wide range of winding conditions, co. says. It can come with a rewind shaft and a finished-roll unloading cart.

Energy-curable oligomers, monomers

Co. presented 23 new oligomers and three new monomers for UV/EB applications at the e/5 UV&EB Technology Expo and Conference in Chicago. Among the featured products are the CN3108, CN 3109 and CN 3110 specialty oligomer/monomer blends for laminating adhesives. They reportedly exhibit good adhesion, flexibility and water resistance.

Particles added to UV-curable coating

Co. introduces a special tactile coating that is created by adding particles to a UV-curable coating base through a silkscreen printing process. The coating, Nitty Gritty, can be opaque or transparent. A spot application can be overprinted in register to a printed image for a slightly raised, rough textured surface.

Non-skid coating

Co.'s UV-curable, non-skid coating, UF170218, can be used as an overprint varnish for hot-stamping applications, in addition to its intended use as a non-skid coating. It also has been used as a primer for cold-foil stamping on porous materials.

Coating ideal for applications with variable information

A UV-curable coating, Prime ImageCoat is receptive to many forms of marking, imaging, printing and decorating—including hot-foil stamping and thermal transfer. Ideal for applying bar codes, security features and other applications where variable information is required, the finish is high gloss and compatible with water-based and UV-curable inks.
