Baker's Dozen: UK labelmaker cooks up digital converting

London-based Baker Self Adhesive Label Co. adds an Omega Digicon HS converting line from AB Graphic Intl. (www.abgint.com) for preprinted webs up to 13 in. wide. The unit (above) features 13 key components including a patent-pending, semi-rotary, electronic system on the diecutting station, which permits flexible tooling to be used from other presses.
The Omega Digicon line is integrated with an HP Indigo ws4050 digital-print engine (www.hp.com) and includes a 20-in. unwind module, electronic web guide and semi-rotary hot-foil stamping with Omega auto positioning. A flexographic printing station with auto-register positioning and UV/infrared drying enables processing of water-based or UV-curable inks, varnishes and coatings.
Says managing director Steve Baker, "the Digicon will ensure a high-quality finish to high-quality printed labels. We now have the ability to print virtually any design on virtually any substrate. After many years of deliberating, we feel digital label printing has become a truly viable option where some existing work can be effectively transferred."
