Dryers and Curing Systems

Associate Editor: Jorina Fontelera -- Converting Magazine, 3/1/2006

Hybrid drying system

The Horizon drying system offers the features and advantages of roll support and flotation drying systems. The air flotation style nozzles draw the web onto the surface of strategically placed web-support rollers. This system provides the high heat-transfer coefficient typical of flotation dryers with web control and stability of roll support dryers.

UV curing lamp

Co. will launch its new e-System mini electronic UV curing lamp at IPEX 06, April 4 – 11 in Birmingham, UK. The system features single phase, energy saving 4kW power supply and a new patented reflector. The lamp head can cure web widths up to 14 in. Optional infrared cassettes can be supplied to permit interchange between the UV cassettes when running conventional inks on inline presses without having to re-web the press.

Flotation dryer

The Perfect Float® flotation dryer is designed to anneal and then cool a high-value film web, co. says. The heating zone includes a combination of flotation nozzles and infrared modules for additional heating energy. The cooling zone uses a cooling foil to bring the web temperature back to ambient in a controlled fashion. The dryer also includes makeup and recirculation air HEPA filtration.

Slimmed down applications

The SpectraCure Model UV curing system has been slimmed down for more compact applications and has gone through intense aerodynamic testing. Airflow patterns help the irradiator cooler keep heat away from the substrate. System comes with infrared heat filters and an automatic damper cooling system that maintains constant irradiator chamber temperature using only ambient air cooling.

Air-cooled UV curing system

The UVXL™ air-cooled UV curing system uses medium-pressure mercury arc lamps, which are available in sizes from 6 to 80 in. Optional metal halide bulbs are available for special needs. The system uses optics to maximize UV output and its shutter design makes liners easier to change for improved heat extraction.

Curing system for narrow web

Co. launches the MBS®-5, a UV curing system for the narrow-web market. New developments in reflector geometry and integrated URS® technology allow the MBS®-5 to produce curing results using low power UV lamps that were only previously achieved with higher powered UV systems, co. says.

UV curing system

Co.'s wide web processor is designed to be installed inline with CI flexo, gravure and offset web presses. The Maximum Speed UV dryer features the latest technology in computer controlled, air-cooled UV lamp systems. Its Smart 2100 Control Platform monitors UV drying conditions in real-time sequence. It features an energy optimizer and air filtration system that ensures clean air in the curing chamber and prolongs life and intensity of the UV lamp system.

Electron beam processors

Co.'s electron beam processors can instantly cure clear or opaque coatings. Solventless adhesives can be cured between paper, film or foil lamination, and coatings and inks can be cured on heat-sensitive substrates. Co.'s EB systems can handle web widths up to 130 in. with line speeds up to 2,000 fpm. Each system is configured to match the user's specific needs for dosage level, product width and handling.

New on the Converting Floor: EB curing replaces heat-set presses

When Lithotype (South San Francisco, CA) decided to go with lithographic offset printing and electron beam curing instead of using heat-set presses to print on film and foil for seasonings mix and drink mix pouches, it wanted a unit that would not cause change in the molecular level of the polyvinyl chloride or polyethylene film. "We chose a low-voltage system because we are surface-printing EB inks and coatings," says Gary Gassman, vice president of operation. "The low-voltage system has allowed us to monitor the depth of the cure," and avoid making the substrate brittle.

Gassman and crew decided to purchase Energy Sciences Inc.'s EZ Cure system (www.ebeam.com) to go with their eight-color Sanden offset press. They were able to tune the ESI unit from 110 kV down to 90 kV in order to minimize the effect of the process on the material. "It has improved the quality of the product we put out in the marketplace immensely," Gassman says. "It's a lot better than what we were doing before."

Recently, ESI introduced a new addition to its line with the EZ Cure-DF™. Featuring a shorter web path, it is designed to cure wet-on-wet EB offset and CI flexo inks and coatings, as well as laminating adhesives. The new system can handle high speed web-production lines with widths from 20 to 54 in.
