Want industry news? Go online
Mark Spaulding, Editor -- Converting Magazine, 9/1/2005
As a typical American, (and for purposes of discussion, I'll assume Converting readers are typical Americans), where you go for news has been shifting. While your local television news continues to be at the top of the list, news consumption behaviors are continuing to move toward the Internet, says a study released this summer.
About three in 10 Americans now say they regularly go online to get news, according to the Pew Research Center for the People & the Press (Washington, DC). The researchers noted that just a few years ago, only one in four got their news from the Internet, and that the percentage of people who go online for news on a typical day has increased by half over the last four years. The response was even stronger when people were asked whether they had used the Internet for news purposes on the previous day—the question that produced the roughly 30 percent estimate.
Along with last month's graphic redesign and refocusing of editorial in Converting, you might have also noticed about half as much space devoted to news as we typically publish. It's statistics like those above, as well as the nature of being a monthly magazine, that lead us to de-emphasize news in our printed publication.
Let's be honest. We're all more interested in whatever hits closest to home. And for converters of flexible packaging, labels, cartons and other products, that means news about what's happening in our industry. To succeed in this business, you can't exactly wait around for your monthly issue of Converting to find out what's going on. You need to go online today and every business day. Here's why. Visitors to www.convertingmagazine.com will typically find anywhere from six to two dozen industry-news stories a week posted at the top of our home page. In the past 12 months, we've reported 487 online news stories—everything from the latest mergers & acquisitions among converters or suppliers to new industry-research reports and capital-equipment installations. That's about 50 percent more news coverage than our closest competitor—with some stories reported weeks before anyone else.
So, if it's not already in your Favorites list, be sure to bookmark www.convertingmagazine.com today. Join the thousands of our Website users each month who make the news section their first stop. You can't afford to wait.
