Adhesive pattern control system

The LogiComm™ integrated adhesive pattern control and verification system has on-line adhesive detection, product inspection and production reporting capabilities for line speeds up to 3,937 fpm. Its pattern control unit provides a selection of bead choices and up to eight independent triggers per control module. High-speed folder/gluer

The Signature Elite high-speed folder/gluer has speeds up to 1,805 fpm, has an increased overall backfold speed and a third axis option that can be used to fold front and back simplex style trays. Its belted six-corner folding unit prevents scuffing by using a belt to fold carton, co. says. The feeder has a pneumatic feed gate that lifts both side guides and feed gates for fast changeover and blank removal.

New on the Converting Floor: Machine enables in-house pocket folder converting

Cleveland, OH-based 48hourprint.com (www.48hourprint.com) recently installed a Kluge OmniFold automatic folder/gluer, which enabled the company to convert pocket folders in-house.

"We used to send everything out," says Jim Lemmer, vice president of production. "Now, we do it all in-house and we run the machine about six hours a day." The folder/gluer allows them to convert six- to eight-pocket folders every day, ranging from 250 to 10,000 pieces each.

The OmniFold can process 30-in.-wide by 32-in.-long sheets at speeds of 3,000 to 30,000 pieces per hour. It has a right- or left-hand side sheet registration, a combination angled or vertical buckle fold unit, flipper gate and tab blast. Between the feed section and the combination buckle fold unit, the machine offers six feet of converting area. Due to its modular construction, the owner can also expand the machine's capabilities as needed, Kluge says.

System for in-line or off-line web configurations

Co.'s folder/gluer system can be used for in-line and off-line web configurations. The electronic- and press-driven, multiple size pattern gluers are modular units that can be used to apply viscous materials onto a continuous web in predetermined patterns or full coverage. The unitized rotary plow is designed to plow-fold a single web prior to sheeting. It does this in either the up or down configuration, in line with the web travel.

Appearing at Print® 05

Co. will be displaying the Petratto Metro 78 and 105 folder/gluers at Print® 05 & Convertingsm 05 trade show to be held Sept. 9–15 in Chicago. The machines feature a pile feeder for large sheets or blanks and a belts feeder for small- and medium-sized sheets and irregular-shaped blanks. Their photoelelectric cells detect the sheet at the start of the cycle and when it exits, enabling the machines to control the position of the work as it passes through. They can handle standard and non-standard boxes.

Vacuum system improves speed

The SuperGluer® folder/gluer has a low-pressure vacuum system that holds the blanks in place, eliminating the overhead carrier belt and reducing the number of moving parts by 80 percent. With the added assistance of this low-pressure vacuum, and without the friction and drag of overhead carrier belts, the unit is designed to run at over 2,300 fpm. The vacuum bed also eliminates the traditional "trombone" and requires minimal setup, co. says. Scuffing and crushing are also reduced because of the use of the vacuum instead of hard rubber top belts.

Folder/gluer with carton windowing capabilities

In order to save floor space, co. combined carton windowing capabilities with its Vista folder/gluer. The machine operates at speeds up to 500 fpm, producing 30,000 cartons per hour. Coated rollers and vacuum belts with exposed cotton fibers are used in order to eliminate window scratching. Plus, the adhesive is applied to the window rather than the carton blank in order to increase speeds, co. says.

Unit handles chlorinated hydrocarbons

Co. makes a variety of customized air pollution control systems that destroy VOCs. They can accommodate volumes ranging from 100 to 250,000 scfm and can handle chlorinated and non-chlorinated hydrocarbons. Some designs use dual burners in the combustion chamber and up to three heat-exchanger vessels with ceramic media. The double-damper system, with a fresh-air purge between each vessel, ensures that no leaks occur, co. says. Each system is offered with 99.99 percent destruction rates.
