UV/EB coatings and inks

Associate Editor: Jorina Fontelera -- Converting Magazine, 1/1/2005

EB gravure coating

The new INXCure EB (electron beam) coating replaces a laminate layer in flexible packaging, saving printers time and money, co. says. Created to work with EB ease and speed, the coating will work over an array of inks used in the flexible packaging industry. Later on, the co. plans on modifying the coating to incorporate unique raw materials in order to reduce the level of trace solvents to non-detectable levels.

UV carton coating

Craigcoat is a non-skid, UV curable coating for folding cartons that is highly reflective, scratch- and mar-resistant and displays up to 49 percent brighter gloss than solvent-based or aqueous coatings. It meets all coefficient-of-friction requirements and is also high rub-, abrasion-, block- and crease-resistant. The coating is completely press-ready and requires no heating. Craigcoat contains no volatile organic compounds (VOC), which meets the National Ambient Air Quality Standards for ozone and fine particulate emissions. Made of 100 percent solid material, the amount of coating applied as a liquid is the same amount left after curing, resulting in less waste and greater coating mileage, co. says.

Silicone-free opaque white

Co. introduces the 78-5-300 UV silicone free opaque white for screen printing, said to provide superior flow and leveling without significant "screen drip through". It enables printers to print much crisper in extremely small font, while printing at speeds up to 400 fpm. The 78-5-300 offers considerably whiter, brighter and more opaque films. It has unmatched overprinting with other print technologies like hot and cold foil, UV Flexo, UV Letterpress, UV Offset and thermal transfer, co. says.

High-speed UV curable coating

The 35HG is a new high-speed, ultraviolet curable coating that is as economical as a traditional "stick and shine," but has higher end attributes like greater chemical resistance. It is very high gloss and has a high run speed. The coating can be cured in excess of 400fpm with a 300wpi lamp. The product also offers superior water resistance compared to traditional, standard gloss coatings, co. says.

Fast-cure UV Ink

To meet the demand for higher-quality variable data printing on high-speed label presses, co. designed the Jetrion Fast-Cure UV inkjet ink. This ink prints and cures instantly on almost every type of label subtrate. It is extremely durable and abrasion resistant on high-gloss or film materials, even in harsh-environment applications. It is environmentally friendly, with no VOCs, and the non-solvent ink never dries on the printhead. The Jetrion Fast-Cure UV inkjet ink can also be used with Spectra printheads.

New UV-flexo Inks

The Flexocure Σ (sigma symbol) is the 'next generation' of UV flexo inks for labels, enabling printers to achieve higher productivity by eliminating ink changes between jobs, co. says. It has excellent hold-out on cast- and machine-coated papers and very good adhesion on a variety of synthetic substrates. These inks are highly versatile for all types of UV flexo printing, as well as combination printing with rotary screen. The Flexocure Σ is introduced with process printing sets in differing strengths to match the assorted types of engraved anilox metering rolls. The base color range has been customized to provide perfect matches to Pantone base colors.
