Bar code systems & Inkjet printers

Associate Editor: Jorina Fontelera -- Converting Magazine, 1/1/2005

RSS verification

Co. adds RSS on-line bar code verification capabilities to its Viper Printing Inspection System. In addition to being able to verify RSS, it provides printers and converters the ability to verify 2D Data Matrix, Postnet and PDF-417 bar codes. The Viper Printing Inspection System also utilizes high-speed digital cameras mounted on a printing press or rewinder to guarantee that the bar codes meet customers' specifications.

Bar code verifier

The LS200 is the new bar code verification system in co.'s LS series of laser bar code product line. The system is designed to verify bar codes produced via flexo, gravure, offset, ion deposition, thermal or digital printing. The inspection is done in real-time, identifying problems as they develop and marking bad codes. The LS200 combines multiple scan heads, a comprehensive reporting function and optional software for managing sequential bar codes. It uses a laser with a speed of 600 scans per second and is capable of reading an eight-inch bar code. Its scan head mount can be oriented to a ladder or picket fence without the use of tools.

Digital in-line printing system

TASC, the first full digital in-line printing system, prints variable data, sequential numbers and scannable bar codes on aluminum, polyethylene, polypropylene, polyvinyl chloride, paper and carton. Unlike traditional inkjet and thermal printing processes, it prints with no ink bleeding and no dry time. With this system, sensor-controlled synchronization of the image onto each label and scattered printing are possible. Its electronic position unit, designed for bottom thermofoil, automatically compensates for foil shrinkage during production.

Label and tag printer

The LX800 Color Label Printer is an inkjet-based printer that can print onto 1.5 × .75 in. to 8.25 × 24 in. labels and tags in full color. Any combination of text, graphics, logos and photos can be printed onto labels in up to 4800 dots per inch. This solves the problem of pre-printing, co. says. It can be used for product labels, box-end labels with photos or graphics and retail, office or industrial labels. Substrates can include matte-finish labels and semi- and high-gloss materials. The printer comes with the NiceLabel™ SE, Primera Edition label design software, but any other Windows®-based label design software can also be used. Another feature of the inkjet printer is that bar codes cannot be scratched or smudged because of rough handling, co. says.

Inkjet printing systems

The Jetrion 3005 and 3010 are new additions to the Jetrion 3000 inkjet system, which provide customers the option to choose piezo or thermal technology and UV, solvent or water-based inks for their inkjet printing operations. The 3005 is the co.'s first thermal inkjet system, engineered with a compact, modular base and uses water-based ink cartridges. It operates in a range of speeds, up to 600 fpm at the lowest resolution, and image qualities as high as 600 dots per inch. The 3010 is a drop-on-demand printer with a top resolution of 400 × 300 dpi and runs one-inch wide at up to 1,000 fpm. It is compatible with Jetrion's UV and solvent inks and is well suited for mail addressing, packaging and specialty markets applications. It can print on paper, coated stock, foil and plastic cards.

Data matrix, RSS-14 verifier

The TruCheck™ Bar Code Verifier can now verify the full family of reduced space symbology (RSS) bar codes, including linear, stacked and composite. It can also verify data matrix bar codes, becoming the first system to measure the codes to the newly released ISO 15415 two-dimensional print-quality specification. A CCD-based scanning head captures the image of the matrix code and a full ISO report is generated immediately.

RFID bar coding

Co. announces that its shop-floor module can now produce radio frequency identification device (RFID) tags compliant with industry standards. The tags are encoded simultaneously as the bar code labels and text are printed. Any company requiring automated generation of RFID bar code labels can now incorporate the technology into its operation, co. says.

Binary inkjet printers

The BX6000 Series of binary inkjet printers has a 128 × 256 dpi resolution, a 2-in. print band and a dual-head configuration that operates a single print engine. This enables the printer to print four continuous inches. It also has separating heads that allow for printing on different areas of the target piece. The printer has a computer-initiated start-up sequence and an automatic phasing process that optimizes print quality without any operator intervention.
