Film, foil & resins

Editor: Mark Spaulding -- Converting Magazine, 12/1/2004

Clear barrier film fits food applications

New Torayfan® Clear Barrier polypropylene (BOPP) films are made with proprietary resins and are non-coated. Said to have moisture-transmission rates equal to PvdC-coated films, there are two versions—Torayfan® CB-S heat-sealable, clear barrier film and Torayfan® CB-P non-sealable, clear barrier film. The CB-P is designed specifically to replace PVdC-coated film and is intended for packaging torilla chips, extruded corn snacks, pork skins, crackers, cookies, oil-based confections and pet food and treats.

Industrial films can be custom converted

Polyester and other industrial-film substrates are available for immediate access. Co.'s new 3-layer blown-film extrusion line produces materials up to 87 in. wide in gauges from 0.50 to 15 mil. Custom slitting, sheeting and tipping converting services are offered. Film rolls are packaged in dust-free protective wrap and suspended on end boards to eliminate damage. Silicone-release liners, tandem extrusions, thermal-, UV- and EB-silicone coating are also available.

Cold-stamp foils meet IML/shrink label needs

Cold stamping has undergone continuous improvement, and the process is well-established today in label printing. New high-quality cold-stamping foils can be used in beverage, cosmetic, food and OTC-drug applications. Even temperature-sensitive in-mold and shrink labels can now reportedly be decorated by this cold-stamping process. It also offers new design options in flexible packaging for food, confections and non-foods.

Films meet food, medical requirements

Co. now offers three new flex-pack films for food, medical and consumer packaging. TECHBARRIER is a series of oriented films coated with SiOx to achieve oxygen- and water-vapor barrier properties approaching those of aluminum foil for retort pouches, cosmetic tubes, nutraceuticals, medications. SUPERNYL coextruded nylon film is biaxially oriented and contains a barrier resin in the core for a higher oxygen barrier, says co. SANTONYL nylon film is biaxially oriented. Because of the processing conditions and unique resin, SANTONYL reportedly has consistent properties across the web and maintains mechanical properties at higher temperatures than typical nylon films.

Polycarbonate film prints by flexo, digital, screen

Claritex™ polycarbonate films are printable by digital, flexographic or screen using either conventional solvent-based or UV ink systems. Claritex films are said to feature high clarity and exceptional ink adhesion. The new screen-print films provide protection from UV light, chemical spillage and abrasion for second surface-printed graphics. The dimensionally stable films also allow printers to maintain tight registration of multi-colored prints.

Deep-dyed PET film designed for high-quality graphics

Gold 2000 deep-dyed, metallized polyester film is designed for demanding high-quality graphics and label applications. Supplied with an adhesion-promoting pretreatment, Gold 2000 is suitable for use in most printing applications. It is offered in a 2-mil thickness substrate and yields approximately 69 sq ft/lb. Metallization is by aluminum with a deposition of less than 1 ohm/sq.

Packaging film for nutraceuticals

NutraSeal packaging film offers sensitive nutraceuticals the proper moisture-vapor barrier in a transparent structure. The NutraSeal composite features an aluminum-oxide-coated polyester film that is coextruded with a blended polyolefin-sealant layer. The resulting substrate offers clarity for product visibility and moisture-barrier protection, which is unaffected by ambient humidity levels. The AlOx-coated polyester provides the necessary moisture-vapor barrier.
