Machinery maker PCMC may furlough up to 200 workers

Staff -- Converting Magazine, 9/1/2003

Paper Converting Machine Co., manufacturer of printing presses, coaters, tissue and nonwovens converting equipment, says it may lay off up to 212 production and office workers at its Green Bay, WI (Ashland Avenue) facility by Oct. 1.

"The layoff is the result of two factors," says president/CEO Frederick W. Baer. "First, a restructuring by PCMC to move work from its Ashland Avenue facility to lower-cost sites, both its other operating sites in Green Bay and to sources external to the company. The second factor is the slowing of incoming orders for new machinery."

PCMC officials note that order intake prior to October 1 may mitigate both the size and timing of the layoff.
