Chucks & shafts

Editor: Laura Butalla -- Converting Magazine, 9/1/2003

1 Airshafts & chucks

The new COR-LOK® airshafts and chucks feature a new engineered tubing (bladder) design contoured to match the geometry of the co.'s unique, spiraled shaft body. These new airshaft and chuck systems offer several air valve options intended to match virtually any plant requirements, says co. To fully inflate, they require only 90 to 120 psi. Converter Accessory Corp., 800/433-2413, fax: 610/863-7818, www.handleyourweb.com

2 Differential rewind shaft

The DRS-2000 differential rewind shaft accommodates widths down to a half-inch with the self-centering 3-in. model and to one inch with all other models. It is unique because the slipping occurs inside the shaft instead of between the core ID and the shaft OD. A series of rings rotate independently on a center rod, which has bladder-activated braking strips running lengthwise. These braking strips, which can be made with various materials and in varying widths to suit differing tension requirements, allow each ring to slip as necessary to maintain consistent tension. Because the slip differential happens inside the shaft, no dust is created and web contamination is eliminated. The shaft grips the core ID with retractable clamps designed not to harm the core. Double E Co., Inc.,508/588-8099, fax: 508/580-2915, www.doubleeusa.com

3 Differential rewind shaft

This co. introduces its new differential rewind shaft to its family of coreholding equipment. These differential shafts offer precise tension control of high and low tensions, fast setups, and are maintenance friendly, says co. This spacerless system is said to reduce operator setup time and finishes roll quality. EMT International, Inc.,920/468-5475, fax: 920/468-7991, www.emtinternational.com

4 Torque chuck

A new addition to the Raptor Series Shaftless Core Chucks is the Torque Chuck. This new torque chuck is available for use with 3, 4, and 6 in. ID cores. This chuck is said to deliver substantial torque output (over 500 lbs-ft per chuck), durable construction, positive core centering ability and a core friendly design. This torque chuck enables on-machine maintenance and toolless adaptor changes from 3 to 6 in. cores in less than 30 seconds. Operators in corrugating, sheeting, paper finishing or laminating will find this translates into less downtime, less risk of injury and increased productivity, reports co. Tidland Corp., 800/426-1000, fax: 360/834-5865, www.tidland.com

Safety chucks

The SKL line of safety chucks is offered by this co., which is said to provide a safe and effective way of coupling torque devices to shafted unwinds or rewinds. They are available individually or as part of a complete Montalvo web control system. Options include: handwheel safety lock, axial carrier, conical chuck journal seat, handwheel position indicators, high speed models, increased handwheel opening, long housing design, air shaft inflation integration and radial adjustment. Montalvo,800/226-8710, fax: 800/644-5097, www.montalvo.com

Core chucks

QuickGrip torque activated core chucks offer instant core-size changes with pushbutton ease, reports co. These 3 in. chucks will accept quick-change adapter collars for 4, 5, 6, 8, 10 and 12 in. cores. No tools are required to change core sizes; simply push the button and remove the chuck's nose cone, slide an adapter collar over the base chuck, replace the nose cone and the system is ready to run in seconds. Adapter collars are ergonomically designed for ease of handling, and are a fraction of the weight and cost of competitive chuck systems, which require changing the complete chuck when changing core sizes. Schlumpf, Inc., 877/460-4535, fax: 207/893-1905, www.schlumpf-inc.com

Safety chuck

This co. introduces its patented VT Style VT-7 replaceable insert design. This design is said to provide longer lasting concentricity between the safety chuck and roll shaft during operation. The VT-7 features a roll shaft journal made of a round part with a square part, where the round part accepts the load-bearing footprint of the roll shaft, and the square part transmits torque through the safety chuck to the roll shaft. The insert provides longer life between roll-shaft journal changes and replaceable insert changes, more precise quality control to the web during the life of the insert, and fewer quality problems associated with high-speed runs, reports co. Boschert, LLC, 800/479-0010, www.safetychuck.com

High torque chucks

This co. introduces a pneumatic/mechanical high torque chuck. This new chuck incorporates advanced technological capabilities including hardened jaws that concentrically expand; spring return cams; and centering cones for easy insertion. They are manufactured to fit your spindle in any diameter, size and configuration needed. Convertech Inc., 973/328-1850, fax: 973/328-7256, www.convertech.com
