PEF, Kraft Foods name Scott-Hogue packaging scholarship winners

Staff -- Converting Magazine, 1/1/2003

Packaging Education Forum (PEF), Arlington, VA, and Kraft Foods, Glenview, IL, name the first recipients of the Scott-Hogue Scholarship Award Nov. 26. They are Sara M. Damon, a senior at the University of Wisconsin-Stout, and Emma Hollander, a sophomore at the Rochester Institute of Technology.

The PEF Scott-Hogue Scholarship identifies and supports two top packaging students at the undergraduate level. The PEF Scott-Hogue Scholarships are named after James E. Scott, director of packaging engineering and graphics design at Eastman Kodak Co., and Tom Hogue, retired director of packaging markets at DuPont Co. The award was created in 2001 in recognition for both Scott and Hogue's "leadership in bringing the PEF programs and services under the management of the Packaging Machinery Manufacturers Institute (PMMI) leadership," says Ben Miyares, PEF president and vp of industry relations for PMMI.

Kraft sponsors the scholarship and supports the program, administered by the PEF, through a $5,000 grant.

"Both of these outstanding packaging students were selected by the scholarship committee because of their excellent academic credentials and their leadership at their respective schools," says Miyares. "The PEF and Kraft Foods proudly support these future packaging professionals and look forward to the innovations they will introduce to the marketplace in the coming years."

Scott-Hogue scholarship recipients are judged on several criteria: academic achievement, leadership, diversity and financial need. Scholarship winners are eligible to participate in a summer cooperative or internship program within the Kraft Foods organization.

Damon is a senior at the University of Wisconsin-Stout and carries a 3.975 GPA. She has served as a packaging lab assistant including her current position as assistant to the Packaging Materials class. Damon has declared Food Packaging as her technical emphasis and recently won the Sarah Lee Gerrish Communications Award from the PEF. The annual award was established in the memory of Sarah Lee Gerrish, long-time managing editor/executive editor of Packaging Digest.

Hollander is a sophomore at the Rochester Institute of Technology. She carries a 3.27 GPA overall and a 3.8 GPA in her field of study. She is a member of the RIT Packaging Club, a member of the Western New York Chapter of IoPP and is the director of Special Interest House.
