IMC boats

Specifically for metallizers

New Mettalist-StabilizerPlus IMC boats meet applications for flexible plastics, film and paper metallization. Providing improved aluminum puddle and evaporation stability, the boats reportedly reach initial stability in about 30 min and produce high wet-out of aluminum throughout the boat cavity. With longer operational stability, metallizers can now meet critical deposition tolerances and boost productivity by up to 20 percent per linear ft per boat set, says co. New manufacturing processes achieve higher uniformity from boat to boat and lot to lot.

Die-cutting cylinders

With two-week delivery program

Magnetic Cerface™ Die-Cutting Cylinders enable converters to use economical flexible steel dies rather than hard tooling. Setups are said to be fast and precise, and new jobs can be preppedin minutes by changing individual dies rather than cylinders. The flexible steel dies mount quickly, store easily and are held in place by powerful surface-mounting magnets that prevent shifting and lifting at any speed. The custom-built cylinders are ideal for labels, business forms, envelopes, paperboard and other rotary die-cutting applications.

Shaftless unwind stand

Safe and easy roll changes

The Delta Precision Unwind boasts machine-tool linear ball bearings, ball screws, and sealed tapered roller bearings to improve rigidity and extend life. The floor and backstop define roll-entry position such that the core chucks need only be powered into alignment with the core. This eliminates the need for the operator to wrestle the roll into position for core insertion and keeps the operator out of harm's way—no matter what diameter roll is to be loaded. Arms also provide full cross-machine positioning to allow rolls to be run side-by-side in multi-web operations. The stand handles roll diameters up to 84 in., widths up to 138 in., and weights up to 16,000 lbs. Optional equipment includes customer-specified brakes and chucks, multi-truck roll trolleys, dancer-based tension control, and bi-directional multiple bar decurlers.

High-barrier films

New technology introduced

Propafilm® OLS is a specialty BOPP overwrap film that tightens to the pack with or without a shrink tunnel. The film provides a sharp glossy wrap, which is best for CD or tape packs, confectionery products, toiletries, pharmaceuticals, or playing cards. New high-brilliance metallized films, Propafoil® RVU, are also available in a range of thicknesses for use in lamination or as a monostructure for products requiring higher quality on-shelf aesthetics. Propafilm® RDU, a new high-barrier film for extending shelf life, has two sides: one with an acrylic coating and the other with a high-barrier PVdC coating. A dual-ovenable film, CelloTherm®, is said to be ideal for heat-and-eat products such as burritos, pies and frozen bread products. With a biodegradable cellulose base, the film is heat-resistant, semi-permeable to moisture and prevents the growth of bacteria. NatureFlex® E305 has specialty barrier coatings formulated from nitrocellulose to increase protection from moisture and for use on heat-seal machinery. The film can be used in vertical or flow-wrap sealing applications and for twistwrap or bagmaking.

Digital linerboard

For new inkjet printing technology

Designed to use the speed, flexibility and high quality of inkjet-printing techniques, a new digital linerboard is manufactured with an application of Aprion-specific proprietary coating. This creates a surface that enhances the quality of inkjet printing, particularly when used with the coordinating Bel2000 6-color, flatbed-inkjet press. The uniformly coated digital linerboard can be laminated to corrugated materials as part of the manufacturing process. Point-of-purchase displays, corrugated containers and other kinds of promotional items are effectively printed with the linerboard in conjunction with digital inkjet.

X-ray transmission sensors

Wide measurement applications

The Model NDC 312 X-ray transmission sensor can be used as a substitute for nucleonic transmission gauges where an alternative to radioactive isotopes is required; it also complements NDC infrared sensors in this regard. Targeted for a variety of plastics extrusion applications, the 312 sensor provides better measurement performance than even the best-designed beta gauges, says co. Model 312 gauges outperform nucleonic counterparts in several areas, providing sharper streak detection and spatial resolution, lower statistical noise, lower sensitivity to flutter and sensor registration and more precise measurement. The Model 312 gauge is available in two versions. The high-resolution 312N offers excellent, narrow streak resolution and is especially suitable where profile control is most important, such as biax and cast film line applications. The ultra-low-noise 312W has a wider aperture that allows more signal through for better accuracy.

Thermal imager

For extrusion, converting processes

Two new systems, the EC100 and ES100, improve quality and uniformity, reduce scrap and enhance extrusion-process operating efficiency, says co. Specifically designed to monitor film extrusion, extrusion coating and lamination processes, the EC100 continuously supervises the melt-curtain temperature distribution to insure adequate film-to-substrate adhesion. It also features the ability to automatically detect subtle imperfections, such as wavy or running edges, temperature gaps and edge-tears. To allow early detection of die-bolt heater problems or plugged dies, the ES100 subdivides a thermal image into a selected number of sectors that correspond to a die bolt. The ES100 provides an advanced capability for monitoring temperature distributions of extruded sheet and cast film, and the ability to configure any number of measurement sectors for each die bolt on flat-die extruders.
