Digital label-decal press

Prints, cuts; 3 min/sheet

The new Impressa 3 digital press is a third-generation system designed for production environments. It prints and cuts full-color labels and decals in any size or shape, all within a single unit. It is priced thousands of dollars less than other digital label presses, none of which include the ability to digitally cut labels while printing, says co. Printers, including flexo, offset, and screen, can now build new profits on short-run label printing jobs. Because the entire process is digital, Impressa 3 eliminates the need for negatives, plates, artwork, make-ready, dies, inks or clean up. Using co.'s patented Digital DieCut™ technology, Impressa 3 can cut any shape, including complicated contour cuts around artwork, eliminating costly hard-tooled rotary or flat dies.

Static neutralizer

Senses needed power level

The PerforMAX is reportedly the first and only system that automatically senses the static-neutralizing power needed to remove a charge from a surface and adjusts ion output of the static bar to achieve the most effective static-neutralizing performance. The extended range, high-speed system ends static charges even when installed up to 10 in. from the web surface, and up to 20 in. on winders. PerforMAX consists of a control module and static bar; the module monitors output at the static bar, indicates when the bar needs cleaning and other conditions that may prevent peak performance. PerforMAX is also equipped with a range switch that optimizes flexibility and performance by setting for applications where the static bar is located less than 3 or greater than 3 in. away from the target material.

In-mold labelmaker

Servo-driven re-registration

The new ServoMaster label-converting system, specifically engineered for one-pass processing of in-mold labels, is fully servomotor-driven. It unwinds preprinted rollstock, re-registers printed labels into a multiple-cut die system, downloads the cut labels through stacking magazines, and then shuttles the die-cut labels into shrink-wrapped, uniform bricks of prespecified quantity—all in one pass. Web widths of 10-13 and 18-20 in. can be handled. Labor costs are said to be dramatically reduced because the ServoMaster needs just two operators, while traditional systems may need up to six workers.

Optical inspection

Complements CCD methods

The new DC-2000 optical-inspection system is said to be both a cost-effective alternative to camera systems and a complement to existing CCD methods. Its advanced IR-optic system is improved by adding features that eliminate many problems typically associated with older models. Common defects (dirt, scum, fisheye, wrinkles, coating skips, thin spots) that might concern the papermaker are detected at speeds of up to 6,000 fpm—reportedly without interference from ambient room light. The DC-2000 detects holes down to 1/32 in. at production speeds. Features include continuous self-diagnostics, encoded TX and RX sections, a modular design with small footprint, and zone display.

Extrusion-coat sealant

For foil-pack structures

A new mid-performance, extrusion-coating sealant resin, Transcend™, provides good seal and hot-tack capabilities on foil compared to metallocene and PE where converters report adhesion to foil may be difficult, says co. Typical applications include towelettes and swabs, dry soup and powdered drink-mix pouches, and gravy and flavor-mix pouches. The resin is said to enhance overall packing performance due to its low temperature sealing ability and ease of slip modification.

Label inspection

100% narrow-web QC

The PrintVision/Apollo-Label reportedly delivers 100-percent inspection for complete quality control of label printing and production. It visually inspects narrow-web products and labels, while being integrated with a rewinder or other finishing equipment for a total automatic inspection station, or it can be mounted on the press. Employing an LCCD camera and high-tech software, the Apollo-Label stores "good master images" in its memory during setup; tolerances can be set independently so the operator has maximum freedom in job-setting. Sections with defects can be marked on the roll for later removal. A single monitor toggles easily among the master image, running job and the latest fault.
