International Paper says Jan. 8 that it will eliminate 350 jobs, close its containerboard mill in Oswego, N.Y., and reduce its containerboard capacity by 100,000 tons. Representing a 10 percent cut in the mill workforce of the Industrial Packaging Group, the job cuts include 102 employees at the Oswego mill and 150 workers at the Savannah, Ga. mill. Current production levels are expected to be maintained, and all reductions should be completed this year, company officials say.
Due to depressed economic conditions and market pressures, Chicago-based Smurfit-Stone Container Corp. discontinues operations at its Braintree, Mass., sheet plant facility, which manufactures corrugated packaging products. The company will gradually transfer production to the nearby Mansfield, Mass., sheet plant during a three-month period. Braintree will complete operations by mid-March and permanently close March 31. The shutdown impacts about 20 employees.
