TLMI: No crisis through renewed confidence
Putting aside economic woes, TLMI honors its best in tags and labels—for energy drinks to foods, wine and household goods.

In the midst of The Great Recession, it can be difficult to find and capture new business opportunities out of the current market volatility. But for the label and narrow-web packaging printers and converters who attended last month's Tag & Label Mfrs. Institute annual meeting, that task was cut down to size.
"For the vast majority of us, the past year has been a challenging one as we continue to ride out economic volatility and the shifts within our own marketplace," says John Wurzburger of Avery Dennison, Fasson Roll North America, and TLMI meeting chair. "However history has repeatedly shown that in the throes of economic chaos, those companies that persevere often emerge as stronger, smarter and more-effective organizations."
The program, "From Crisis to Confidence" held at the Westin Kierland Resort and Spa in Scottsdale, AZ, offered expertise ranging from deciphering the global economy to taking on social responsibility, adopting sustainability and even reinventing a labelmaking company's business model.
Among the presentations: Barry Asmus, a senior economist for the National Center for Policy Analysis, gave a powerful picture of America's future-here and abroad. Keynote speaker Tim Sanders, past chief solutions officer at Yahoo!, got the TLMI members excited about participating in social responsibility, sustainability and employee development. The TLMI Industry Trends Committee presented the ways their companies (Heidelberg, DuPont, Standard Register and Phototype) successfully reinvented existing business models to meet changing industry requirements. And consultant Eric Wahl gave attendees a dose of how to identify and implement breakthrough thinking to achieve extraordinary end results.
Energetic Best of Show
In this year's TLMI Label Competition, judges analyzed 234 entries, including 25 from international label printing and converting companies. First-place awards went out to 26 North American labels and tags, and for 11 international labels. Seventeen second-place awards were presented, all but one to North American converters.
In the end, Logmatix, Inc. (Marietta, GA), emerged with the 2009 Best of Show award in the "Promotional" category for its Red Rain energy-drink decal (above). The decals, which are applied to the inside of drink-cooler doors at retail stores, were printed using ink from ACTEGA WIT, Inc., along with Harper Corp. of America anilox rolls and die-cut with RotoMetrics tooling.
