Packaging a priority at NPE2009

Plastics show to co-locate with packaging-related events, conferences; introduces Intl. Design Competition.

By Associate Editor Natalie Hasselbacher -- Converting Magazine, 6/1/2009 12:00:00 AM

By and large, packaging is dependent upon plastics and the abundance of their developing technologies. In fact, the industry is the single largest industrial consumer of plastics, which is why the triennial International Plastics Exhibition (NPE) (www.npe.org) will expand its packaging-specific subject matter this summer.

Set for June 22-26 at Chicago's McCormick Place, NPE2009 (left) is expected to draw 75,000 plastics professionals from 120 countries. Nearly 2,000 companies will exhibit new and established technologies across the 1 million sq ft of display space in three buildings. Produced by the Society of the Plastics Industry (www.plasticsindustry.org), NPE will also co-locate with several technical conferences and events to give attendees an effective educational experience.

One example is ANTEC 2009, which is reportedly the world's largest technical conference for plastics, put on by the Society of Plastics Engineers (www.4spe.org). The event will feature multi-paper sessions dedicated to flexible packaging, bioplastics, blowmolding, cast and blown film extrusion, thermoforming and thermoplastics.

NPE2009 logoPET Strategies Plus, produced by Packaging Strategies (www.packstrat.com), will focus on polyethylene terephthalate and its packaging applications. A panel discussion with brand executives highlights the event.

The merging coating technologies organizations NPCA (www.paint.org) and FSCT (www.coatingstech.org) are hosting the Plastic Substrates Coating Conference, a program that will provide professionals who use coatings on plastics, coatings manufacturers and raw-material suppliers various information about UV, test methods, fluoropolymers, Sol-gel and TPO.

SPI's Business of Plastics Conference will feature concurrent educational sessions throughout the five-day show. The event's purposes: Encourage industry growth and new market development, outline the best business-management practices and identify today's downstream consumer demands.

Power to the (plastics) people

The first-ever International Plastics Design Competition People's Choice Award winner will be determined by votes submitted at the IPDC Website (www.plasticsdesign.org). Other categories will be judged during the show and contributed products will be on display in the IPDC pavilion (McCormick West, Booth W123000). All winners will be announced at a special reception on Wednesday, June 24, in the West Building Ballroom Foyer at 5 p.m.

Among eight specialized, multi-exhibitor pavilions, the Emerging Technologies Pavilion will cover the four critical issues of sustainability, bioplastics, nanotechnology and energy.

Among the converting-related technologies, products and services highlighting the show: Surface treaters, metallizers, gauging instruments; web guiding, winding and inspection systems; coating and laminating dies; cutting and sealing devices and flexographic presses (See chart for complete list of all NPE2009 technologies).
