Converter Moves

Editor: Mark Spaulding -- Converting Magazine, 1/1/2008 12:00:00 AM

Stamford, CT-bsed Cenveo, Inc. (www.cenveo.com) will acquire Rex Corp. in an all-cash transaction. With more than $40 million in sales, Rex is one of the largest independent converters of premium and specialty paperboard packaging. The deal is expected to be completed in the first quarter of 2008.

Nanosolar (www.nanosolar.com) of San Jose, CA, ships its first printed solar panel to a German firm. The company developed a process to narrow-web-print solar cells made out of copper indium gallium selenide, a combination of elements that many companies are pursuing as an alternative to silicon. Inks laced with metallic nano-particles allow Nanosolar to print solar cells economically on rolls of foil; the cells produce power at less than $1 per watt, the company says. The order is Nanosolar's first product-based revenue.

Atlanta-based Caraustar (www.caraustar.com) acquires Mayers Fibre Tube & Core of Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. Mayers is a converter of paper cores, paper mailing tubes and composite cans. The company serves the US and Canada with manufacturing representatives and a wide distribution network.

Cortegra (www.cortegra.com), a subsidiary of Menasha Corp., purchases the assets of Capital Printing & Graphics (Fairfield, NJ). Capital has provided packaging for the generic pharmaceutical and nutraceutical markets for more than 20 years. The relocation of Capital Printing's assets to Cortegra's facility in Fairfield will provide enhanced printing capabilities as well as additional inspection and material-handling competencies, the company says. The equipment transition will be completed this month. The purchase is the third acquisition Cortegra has made in three years.
