PCMC hosts DuPont flexo training

More than 45 members of DuPont's Imaging Technologies group, which manufactures and markets Cyrel® flexographic printing plates, took time off from their normal responsibilities to attend five days of internal flexo training hosted by flexo pressmaker PCMC, Green Bay, WI. PCMC provided both a wide-web CI press and a narrow-web press for the training, as well as meeting space, at its Ashland Ave. headquarters facility. In addition, PCMC personnel feted their guests at a cocktail reception held at a luxury skybox at nearby Lambeau Field, home of the NFL Green Bay Packers. Converting was privileged to cover the event firsthand.
"This week's event has brought together DuPont team members including technical sales representatives, corporate account managers, applications engineers, and marketing professionals," says technical marketing manager Bob Hannum. "We're pleased that our entire North American Cyrel® team can take part in five days of training and team-building work, including three days of hands-on flexographic training here at PCMC. DuPont is committed to new technology and investing in our people to improve their printing knowledge to better serve our customers. With the rapid pace of change in our industry, it takes a whole system to print more consistently and higher quality, not just a good plate."
Hands-on experience builds knowledge
DuPont's wide-web hands-on training, using Cyrel®FAST and solvent plates in both digital and analog versions, focused on press-side troubleshooting, and therefore was prearranged to show participants several different anilox/plate/stickyback combinations—presenting a variety of problems when it came to running the job on-press. Plates were shipped ahead and mounted at nearby Fox Valley Technical College to DuPont's specifications. The emphasis was on identifying print problems and diagnosing solutions.
Narrow-web press training was similar in focus and featured digital Cyrel®FAST DFH plates. Suppliers 3M, Sicpa Inks and Harper Corp., all with facilities in or near the Green Bay area, also participated in the collaboration via lunchtime information sessions.
The week's proximity also gave DuPont and PCMC managers the opportunity to get up to speed on each other's current status and outlook on the flexo market. For instance, Bob Hannum gave a Power Point update on DuPont's current overall corporate organization and product range, as well as describing the Cyrel® suite of products. It was attended by PCMC's sales and marketing staff, including global business development manager Tom Jacques. Following the formal presentation, there were informal discussions among the group centering on market outlook, international business, and overall business conditions.
"One of our goals as an organization is to share our knowledge and expertise with our clients and supplier, to allow us all to reap the benefits of new technology being offered within our industry," says Rich Rogals, global sales and marketing director for PCMC's Printing, Coating and Laminating Products group. "When the DuPont organization asked us to host a formal educational program at our manufacturing and training facility in Green Bay, WI, we were able to offer them hands-on demonstrations on fully operational Evolution and Infiniti presses.
"A new demo center is currently under construction at our world headquarters," Rogals continues. "Upon completion of the state-of-the-art facility, our clients and suppliers will be given the opportunity to view product demos and conduct trials on an individual or group basis." When industry leaders work together to advance employee knowledge, customers and the industry wind up winners.
